POSTED May 5, 2024: Driving around today with my family taking signs down was bitter sweet. Sweet because, I can now fully focus again on my career, friends and family. All of which has certainly felt the effects of this campaign. And bitter because it didn’t go our way last night.

I cannot thank Gerard Hudsbeth, Chris Watts, Pat Smith, and Brian Briscoe enough for their mentorship and encouragement. This was the most amazing experience and it’s one I’m so grateful for. Having the opportunity to meet so many incredible amazing supportive kind people throughout this journey has absolutely been the silver lining to whatever disappointment came from last night. To the people that supported me and cheered me on, THANK YOU! You have no idea how much your kind words of encouragement meant on the days when others weren’t so kind.

At the end of the day I have zero regrets. I learned so much, I got thicker skin, I met some incredible people and I gave an incumbent with a political background hell last night sweating it out till the very end.

Congratulations to all candidates elected!

MEET

ERICA GARLAND

Hi! My name is Erica Garland. I’m an HR professional for a major airline, mom to four amazing boys, and fourteen-year Denton resident. I’m running for Denton City Council, At-Large Place 5, because I care about the future of Denton and the people who live here.

Similar to many, I think we’ve lost focus. We need to get back to the unique local issues that affect Dentonites every single day. Issues like working to see that First Responders are funded to meet staffing, training, and equipment needs; maintaining high priority for street repair and new construction through general fund allocations and bond programs; defending and protecting neighborhoods and ensuring their voices are heard, because they are the heart of our city; and I want to re-energize economic development to promote wages at all levels that allow our citizens to thrive, not just survive.

As far as city growth, I want to make sure we are growing in a way that keeps Denton, Denton…the city we love, where we feel safe and want to raise our families. Our growth should preserve Denton’s unique spirit—a city of families, music, education, and art—without increasing taxes and our cost of living.

I will be working with other council members to see how we as city neighbors can helpfully address concerns regarding the needs of persons without homes.

My focus will be on YOU — all Denton residents and businesses.  Thank you for your support!
